Case Study Three- Wolsingham
Secondary School
Creation of a memorial garden for
Suzie

The S.G.D.P. ran a two week summer school aimed at developing the skills of 'gifted children' from years 7 - 9. Just before it was due to start, a much loved pupil at the school sadly died. Hence the decision was made to dedicate the design to Suzie.
The pupils assessed the site: accurately plotting the building and all existing landscaping; completing soil surveys; mapping the environmental conditions etc. They then investigated possible design / planting solutions by collecting and looking through books and magazines. Followed by a visit to Durham Botanical Gardens and Houghall's Nursery Store. Back on their own site, they worked from individual concepts to group designs. Each group then presented their ideas to their peers. After peer review, a final plan was agreed that had features taken from each group design.
The children spent their final day laying out make-shift materials on the grass to represent the proposed features of their plan. This process enabled pupils to 'trouble shoot' the layout and to test the map reading and measuring abilities they had aquired during the course.
