Case Study One- Bullion Lane Primary
Two school quads in need of rejuvenation

The school is located within Chester-le-Street and is a typical pre-war design. This example features two quadrangles that looked miserable and lacked purpose.

Representatives from each year formed a pupil focus group to consult the rest of the school. They asked their classmates about their likes and dislikes relating to the grounds and sought ideas for improvements. They also surveyed the quadrangles, noting important details like suntraps, wet areas and problems such as litter. The pupils used the information they had collected to form a design brief and presented their findings during assemblies. Working in small groups they then made a model of each quadrangle, depicting their 'ideal' school grounds.

The models, the results of the childrens survey and consultation work, along with the information gathered from staff was used to produce a draft design. Everyone was given the opportunity to comment on the design.

Once the final design was agreed, we drew up, coloured and laminated the plan. As always, this final plan proved invaluable as the school began to contact suppliers. From this point onwards, anyone becoming involved in the project could understand quickly what the school was working towards. The plan was also the centrepiece of open nights and fundraising bids.

We supported the school throughout the implementation process, recommending suppliers and advising on planting.

In effect, two new classrooms were created, which are the best resourced in the school for sensory and Multiple Intelligences learning. One quad focused on wildlife and the other on recreational play.
