Background
In March 1998 a group of organisations working
around the North East met to see how they could promote Eco-Schools to more
schools across the county. The Steering Group organised a conference which was
held at the Management Development Centre in Durham City and which was attended
by 100 representatives from 50 schools. Many schools expressed an interest in
the programme, or signed up there and then.
How The Network Developed
As part of it's Education, Participation and
Awareness Roundtable, the County Durham Local Agenda 21 partnership had been
supporting an Education Forum for schools and environmental educators. This
was ably facilitated by the RSPB. The forum was successful but it's members
decided that it needed more focus. Given the number of schools working towards
Eco-Schools in the County by then, it was agreed that more targeted support
for the programme would be beneficial. The County Durham Eco-Schools Network
was born.
What We Hope to Achieve
The Network is still developing. It is in place
to service the needs of member schools in County Durham and Darlington. If schools
feel they no longer need a Network then it will cease to exist. However, the
number of schools involved with the Network is expanding all the time. The network
will continue to support schools wherever possible, with the hope that all participating
schools will achieve the Green Flag award and enjoy the process along the way.
